Course Description
The healthcare system has traditionally approached musculoskeletal care by focusing on pain reduction, tissue healing, mobility restoration, and return to activity. While these remain essential components of rehabilitation, emerging evidence suggests they may not address the primary determinant of long-term health, resilience, and recovery: skeletal muscle.
Based on Dr. Gabrielle Lyon’s Forever Strong, this six-week guided course explores the science behind muscle-centric medicine and challenges clinicians to rethink the role of muscle as far more than a movement-producing tissue. Participants will examine skeletal muscle as an endocrine organ, a metabolic regulator, an immune reserve, and one of the strongest predictors of longevity, recovery, and functional independence.
Rather than serving as a traditional book review, this course critically evaluates each section of the book through the lens of contemporary sports medicine. Weekly discussions bridge the gap between basic science and clinical application, exploring how protein intake, resistance training, muscle quality, and metabolic health influence orthopedic rehabilitation, injury prevention, chronic pain management, and healthy aging.
Participants will leave with practical strategies for integrating muscle-centric principles into patient education, rehabilitation programming, return-to-sport decision making, and long-term performance development.

Knowledge Gap
Current rehabilitation education emphasizes tissue pathology, pain management, mobility restoration, and functional recovery, yet comparatively little attention is devoted to skeletal muscle as the primary physiological system governing metabolic health, resilience, recovery capacity, and longevity.
As a result, many clinicians successfully restore joint motion and reduce symptoms without fully addressing muscle quantity, muscle quality, or the nutritional and loading strategies necessary to optimize long-term outcomes. This course bridges that gap by translating the emerging evidence surrounding muscle-centric medicine into practical rehabilitation strategies that extend beyond injury resolution toward lifelong health and durability.
Learning Objectives
- Participants will be able to explain the physiological role of skeletal muscle as a metabolic, endocrine, and immune organ and describe how muscle health influences orthopedic recovery, chronic disease risk, and healthy aging.
- Participants will be able to apply muscle-centric principles to rehabilitation by integrating resistance training, protein optimization, and progressive loading strategies into clinical decision making across the rehabilitation continuum.
- Participants will be able to critically evaluate traditional rehabilitation paradigms and identify opportunities to shift clinical practice from symptom-centered care toward interventions that maximize muscle preservation, adaptation, and long-term functional capacity.

Successful rehabilitation should not be measured solely by pain reduction or restoration of movement.
The ultimate objective is to build and preserve high-quality skeletal muscle capable of supporting lifelong movement, metabolic health, injury resilience, and functional independence.
